In fact, it is not an exercise or diet plan it is a simple a measure of your body mass. It is a simple ratio of your height and weight that tells you whether you are overweight or underweight for your height.

BMI or Body Mass Index was developed by Adolphe Quetelet in 1800s. In fact, in some literature it is referred to as Quetelet index. Adolphe Quetelet was a statistician, astronomer, mathematician among other things, and he developed this index while working on social physics. His index is still in use today with just a few variations from his original discovery.

Unlike popular belief, BMI does not measure the amount of fat in the body instead, it only compares the individual's height to weight ratio vis--vis the standardized ratio. However, it has its flaws especially to some body types, and this is why it is not the only method that is used to diagnose obesity exclusively.

Basically, the formula computing BMI is simple Just take your weight in kilograms and then divide it with your height in square meters. For instance, assuming that you are 6 feet tall, which is about 1.8288 meters when you square it, you will get (1.8288 x 1.8288 3.345). Assuming that you weigh 145 pounds, which is around 65.91 kilograms. Therefore, to compute your BMI, divide 65.91 by 3.345. In this case 19.70 is the BMI. The normal weight ranges between 18.5 and 24.9. For overweight people, the BMI falls between 25 and 29.9. Anything above this is an indication of obesity. Keep in mind that a BMI calculator female version does not exist, it is the same formula for both female and male.
